Newport News – A Vibrant Community & Busy Workplace

Newport News, the fifth largest city in Virginia, grew from farms and railroad stations. Today, nearly 180,000 people call southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula home. Shipbuilding, military and aerospace and other industry’s fuel the city’s economic engines. It became known as a regional center for technology companies in the 1990s, as well.

Newport News boasts plenty of military members and families thanks to the Newport News Shipbuilding, the joint U.S. Air Force-U.S. Army installation at Joint Base Langley-Eustis. It’s the city’s largest employer with more than 24,000 employees. Fort Eustis puts another 10,000 people to work as the second largest city employer.

Research and education also play pivotal roles. More than 2,000 scientists conduct research at The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility.
